Selecting the right caster

This guide below will help you make the right decision when choosing Hao Phong's caster:. In this guide we are going to look some consideration you've have to make when choosing the right caster

1. Diameter

Remember the larger the wheel, the easier push it to move, so just grab the biggest wheel as you can. You'll enjoy:

  • Smooth rolling on obstacle, hole, groove
  • Better load capacity, better wear and tear

But you do not want a wheel that is so large that it will raise the center of gravity of your load that can lead to tipping. Also please check does your cart have height limitation as it may move through door, electric elevator, etc.

2. Load capacity

Divide the load capacity needed by the number of casters being used to get the capacity per caster. Use the following formula:

X = (A+B)/M. Definitions:

  • X: Load capacity for one caster
  • A: Cart's own weight
  • Z: Maximum weight shall be applied on cart
  • M: Overload rating (based on the number of casters applied to a certain cart)

M.jpg

The M - overload rating is always lower than the number of applied casters. It is because:

  • A load may sometimes be greater than anticipated
  • Flooring conditions may cause uneven movement
  • Debris or cracks could cause a sudden halt or bounce, shifting the weight of the load
  • Humans have a tendency to hitch a ride

3. Wheel material

General rule: we use hard wheels on soft floor surfaces and soft wheels on hard floor surfaces. Soft wheels are rubber, Polyurethane and hard wheels are nylon and metal.

In standard working condition, please refer to rubber wheels. Rubber wheels are cushion, shock absorbing and noise reduction. It can be use indoor, outdoor and have better life time than Polyurethane (PU), Thermoplastic Polyurethane (TPU), Thermoplastic rubber (TPR), etc. For quite area, the pneumatic rubber, elastic rubber is more recommended

However, in working area that the caster shall contact with gas, oil, grease or chemical then you should avoid using rubber. The thermoplastic rubber can be used here if the load capacity required is around 200 - 300 kgs. Else, you should choose plastic wheel, from PA to PU, TPR and PP. Please be noted that the PU, TPU and TPR will lose their physical strength gradually and much faster if exposed in sunlight - they should work or at least rest indoor.

For hard working condition like steam, salt and water splash - use the PA caster with Stainless steel bracket.

Heat resistant: With temperature from 200°C and below, you can use Heat resistant or Phenolic. Strictly follow Manufacturer’s recommendation, request for advice if needed. Metal wheel can bear high temperature but you should be careful with these hot metal wheels..

High load capacity: PU, PA and metal are preferred. Especial PA and metal is strong and hard so they are best suit bearing heavy cart/ machine for a long period.

4. Other things needed to consider

a. Caster type

  • Narrow path: 4 Swivel casters - like the Hand cart you use in Super market.
  • Wide path, long straight way: you can use 2 Swivel casters and 2 Rigid casters. It's efficient as you can navigate the cart to move long straight more easily. The Rigid casters are also much cheaper than those Swivel.

b. Wheel's width

  • Slim: the wheel can rotate much easily
  • Thick: can bear high load capacity but need more force to rotate

c. Replacement

if possible, please detaches the old/ rusty one and bring sample directly. If you are too far away, you can send us the picture (with any readable mark, logo, letter and number on the steel bracket or wheel tread) through email.

Manually you can measure the old one and try our Caster Search System (CSS ^^) to find the suitable one.
